How it works
Enter the food total from the menu and the number of people. For ++ prices keep both service charge and VAT ticked. If menu prices already include VAT, untick VAT. Add a discount or tip if you have one, then copy the amount or the link to send to friends.
Formula
Food after discount = food total − discount
Service charge = food after discount × 10%
VAT = (food after discount + service charge) × 7%
Per person = (food after discount + service + VAT + tip) ÷ people
What does ++ mean on a Thai menu?
Many Thai restaurants and hotels list prices with “++”, such as 350++. It means the price excludes two things:
- Service charge — usually 10% of the food
- 7% VAT — charged on the food plus service charge
Restaurants without ++ usually include VAT in the price and may not add a service charge. Check the note at the bottom of the menu or ask the staff.
Why ++ isn’t simply 17%
VAT is charged on the amount including service, not on the food alone:
- Food 1,000 baht
- 10% service charge = 100 baht
- 7% VAT on 1,100 = 77 baht
- Total 1,177 baht, an increase of 17.7%
Adding a flat 17% gives 1,170 baht, 7 baht short, and the gap grows with the bill.
What ++ prices really cost
| Food | With 10% service | With VAT (to pay) | 2 people | 4 people | 6 people |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 500 | 550 | 588.50 | 294.25 | 147.13 | 98.08 |
| 1,000 | 1,100 | 1,177 | 588.50 | 294.25 | 196.17 |
| 2,000 | 2,200 | 2,354 | 1,177 | 588.50 | 392.33 |
| 3,500 | 3,850 | 4,119.50 | 2,059.75 | 1,029.88 | 686.58 |
| 5,000 | 5,500 | 5,885 | 2,942.50 | 1,471.25 | 980.83 |
Rounding so nobody is short
Splitting usually leaves satang. This calculator rounds each share up to a whole baht and shows how much the rounding adds over the bill. Leave it as a tip, or let whoever paid keep it to cover transfer fees.
Splitting unevenly
If some people skip the drinks or order a big dish just for themselves, split the bill in two:
- Divide the shared dishes equally
- Each person pays for their own items, plus service and VAT (multiply by 1.177 for ++ prices)
How much to tip?
If the restaurant already charges 10% service, an extra tip isn’t expected, as most of the service charge goes to staff. Where there is no service charge, Thais often leave the small change or 20–100 baht depending on the service.
FAQ
What does ++ mean on a Thai menu?
Prices marked ++ exclude service charge and VAT. Add the service charge (usually 10%), then 7% VAT on the total including service, so 1,000 baht of food costs 1,177 baht.
Why not just add 17%?
Because VAT is charged on the amount including service: (1,000 + 100) × 7% = 77 baht, not 70. The total increase is 17.7%, not 17%.
Is the discount taken before or after service charge?
Most restaurants take the discount off the food first, then add service charge and VAT on the discounted amount. If your receipt differs, follow the receipt.
