How it works

Choose monthly salary or daily wage, enter the amount, then the hours of workday overtime, holiday work and holiday overtime (only those you have). You get the hourly wage and the extra pay at the legal minimum rates.

Formula

Hourly wage = (monthly salary ÷ 30) ÷ normal hours per day

What is overtime pay?

Overtime pay is what you earn for working beyond normal hours or on a holiday. Thailand’s Labour Protection Act sets minimum rates for three cases:

  • Workday overtime — at least 1.5× the hourly wage (section 61)
  • Holiday work during normal hours — monthly employees get at least 1× extra, daily workers at least 2× (section 62)
  • Holiday overtime — at least 3× the hourly wage (section 63)

Monthly employees get only 1× extra on holidays because their salary already pays for the holiday, so the total is 2×, the same as daily workers.

Working out the hourly wage

Hourly wage = monthly salary ÷ 30 ÷ normal hours per day

Salary Hourly wage Workday OT (1.5×) Holiday OT (3×)
15,000 62.50 93.75 187.50
20,000 83.33 125.00 250.00
25,000 104.17 156.25 312.50
30,000 125.00 187.50 375.00
40,000 166.67 250.00 500.00

(Based on an 8-hour working day, baht per hour.)

A full-month example

An employee on 24,000 baht a month working 8 hours a day earns 100 baht an hour. This month they:

  • Worked 10 hours of workday overtime: 10 × 150 = 1,500 baht
  • Worked 8 hours on a Saturday holiday: 8 × 100 = 800 baht extra
  • Stayed 2 more hours that Saturday: 2 × 300 = 600 baht

That is 2,900 baht on top of salary.

Who isn’t covered by these rates?

Section 65 excludes some employees from overtime under sections 61 and 63, such as those with authority to hire, fire or assess performance on the employer’s behalf, and certain kinds of work such as travel where hours can’t be fixed. They may be paid per extra hour instead.

Good to know

  • Employers may not deduct from overtime pay except where the law allows.
  • Your company may pay higher rates. Check your contract or work rules.
  • Overtime is taxable income and counts toward your annual income tax.
  • If you are not paid overtime as the law requires, complain to the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare or call 1546.

FAQ

How is OT calculated in Thailand?

Divide the monthly salary by 30 for the daily wage, then by normal hours per day (usually 8) for the hourly wage. Workday overtime must be at least 1.5× the hourly wage. On 24,000 baht a month that is 100 baht an hour, so OT is 150 baht an hour.

How much is holiday work paid?

For normal hours on a holiday, monthly employees get at least 1× extra (they are already paid for the holiday) and daily workers at least 2×. Hours beyond normal hours on a holiday are paid at least 3×.

Is everyone entitled to OT?

No. Section 65 excludes some employees, such as those with authority to hire, fire or reward on the employer’s behalf, and certain kinds of work. They may be paid per hour instead. Check your contract and company rules.

Can my employer force me to work overtime?

Generally the employer needs your consent each time, except for work that cannot stop or emergencies, and total overtime and holiday hours are capped by law. For questions, call the 1546 hotline.
